Psalm 118:5

When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place.

I love this verse, and the imagery of a "spacious place." We don't know for sure what the author of the psalm (probably David?) was troubled by, but God delivered him to a sense of freedom. He was no longer feeling hemmed-in and oppressed by what was bothering him. This is the feeling of freedom available to us 24/7. I am so thankful, knowing that no matter what happens to me, I always have the "spacious place" provided by God.

Holy Lord, thank-you!!! Your comfort and protection are always with me. I am so grateful. Freedom from useless worry is a wonderful thing! Amen

Psalm 118:5

All of Psalm 118 shows David’s (if he is the author) confidence in God’s love and protection. If we look at our relationship with God in the same way, we can turn to Him not only in distress, but in joy. This freedom from fear and anxiety is so important. Give them to God.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I always seek freedom from my fears by praying to you. Amen

Freedoms

Psalm 118:5

Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free.

God created the heavens and earth and all things, and all events are in His hands. So no matter what distress we are in, there’s nothing to be afraid of as long as we pray and call on God. We are fortunate because we are able to practice and execute our faith each day not like a lot of other countries who are persecuted as Christians. Only God is the Master of our fate.only God can give us the freedom from sin. Without God’s permission, not a single string of our hair will be lost. Remember…

Psalm 118:5 “Hard pressed” may have a multitude of meanings. In the context of this psalm it appears to be a situation of being surrounded by hostile forces. The first four verses state God’s love endures forever. God stands as the always reliable liberator who sets us free from the power of the hostile forces that beset us. A spacious place may simply be a quiet devotional time as I am experiencing now, a walk in the woods, listening to beautiful music, working in the garden or any number of other things. God knows the spacious place for each of us and frees us to go there when we need it most.

Prayer - God of spacious places, thank You for…
