A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, October 26

1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

"The Lord does not look at the things people look at." These words spoken to Samuel make me think about transformation. We can never see things or people like God sees them, but we can learn to be more "Godly" in our appreciation of beauty. In other words, I think I still tend to have automatic thoughts about people's appearance, and what that appearance "says" about them. It is harder, and takes time and effort to see into someone's heart. But this is often where one's beauty lies.

Lord above, help me to appreciate the beauty in others, and not make negative assumptions when the beauty is not physical or obvious. Help me to practice this every day. Amen

1 Samuel 16:7

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

Only God can read our hearts. He is not so concerned with our outward appearance, attitudes and motives or even the things other people judge us for . The good works we may do, the kind and respectful words that we may speak, are commendable but God looks at our heart, for the heart can and could be full of deceit. Appearances can be very deceptive. When we trust the Lord a…

1 Samuel 16:7 We live in a culture that seems dominated by the beauty business. Not just beauty but staying young as well. Hair and nail salons, weight loss programs, facelifts, and Botox are everywhere. They advertise constantly in hopes of our believing we need them for success and love. It is very hard to ignore them, especially if you don’t think you are beautiful and/or you don’t want to age too quickly. I wish everyone knew the importance of this verse, especially today’s teen girls struggling to “fit “into today’s ridiculous standards, especially for weight. God has made us and it is our beautiful hearts he wants not a beautiful body. Prayer: Gracious God, Help me in all my dealings wi…

This is often a hard example to follow. I had a perfect example of this when attending my current church for the first time. There was a man whom I thought was homeless, sitting against the back wall of the sanctuary. Several months later he spent a week refinishing the sanctuary floor by himself and several weeks later was the scripture reader. This man is beautiful where it counts.

Dear Lord, help me to…

There is a saying, “Beauty is only skin deep”, and I feel that this could be used to explain what God is saying. Satan was the most beautiful of all created angelic beings, but his heart was ugly. I will always attempt to look for the goodness of the person no matter what their appearance. I know that I have let the beauty of a person steer me in the wrong direction and regretted…
