Psalm 34:15-22

The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,

and his ears are attentive to their cry;

but the face of the LORD is against

those who do evil,

to blot out their name from the earth.

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all,

he protects all his bones,

not one of them will be broken.

Evil will slay the wicked;

the foes of the righteous will be condemned.

The LORD will rescue his servants;

no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Today’s devotion in “The Upper Room” is a powerful one. If you are reading this, but have not seen the UR devotion for today, it is worth a look. The writer describes a time when he was very ill, fearing death would take him. He turned to prayer and in his scripture reading found Psalm 34. I believe God led him to that psalm. It literally revived his spirit, and “Psalm 34:19 now lives in my heart.” This is the power of God’s Word- it can drag us from despondency back to life with Him. These life verses are just what we call them: life verses. I also think that life verses can change, or multiply, as we become closer to God. In another season, God may speak to me in a new way. My most recent “addition” is Philippians 4:6.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Holy Lord, your Word is a treasure, and brings me into your presence. I am thankful and I know that it is by your grace that I have access to scripture. May my life, although small and insignificant, be worthy. Amen

Psalm 35:15-22

In our worst moments and in the times we are most frightened God stays near. He sees us and hears our prayers, he provides what we need and protects us. Prayer is powerful and settles me. I know God hears my every breath.

Heavenly Father, I come to You with great thankfulness. I am thankful for Your nearness, for Your protection, and for Your Grace. Amen

Psalm 34:15-22

As I wrote yesterday, fear often immobilizes us. We are afraid. We don't know where to turn, who to trust, or what to do. The writer of today's devotion knew where to turn--his Bible. He found a verse that, while it didn't cure him, it brought him comfort. He realized that he was not alone AND that God knew and loved him. Many people have a "life verse." One that has meaning for them and one they have committed to memory. Once you do that, the comfort it brings is always close.

Prayer: Gracious God, Your word is as close to each of us as our Bible. Memorizing is not "old school." It can be a life sav…

Peqce in troubled times

(focus: to trust God with my troubles

Psalm 34:19

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

This message is so important because it is explaining we must have faith, acknowledge that suffering is a part of life, but more important we should  believe in God's promise of being with us, even during hardship.  We are  to pray for strength, to remember that God hears our cries, allowing us to have the hope that he has the ability to understand and guide us, which may come through friends, prayer, or spiritual strength. Acknowledge that hardships are not a sign of God’s abandonment but…

Psalm 34:15-22

Our hope in the Lord is complex and difficult to understand for those who do not believe. If the man who’s spirit was revived by Psalm 34 would have died, he would have entered eternal life in heaven in the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Is this not also deliverance from his troubles? Surely there would be grief for those left behind, but if they shared his hope, they would be comforted in the knowledge they would be reunited with their loved one. This is why Paul wrote, “O death, where is thy victory? O dearh, where is thy sting?” Our Lord and Savior has defeated sin AND death.

Prayer - Gracious and merciful God,…
