Exodus 16:11-19

The LORD said to Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’”

That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.’”

The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.

Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. ” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

I really love today’s readings and devotion. I have never understood why, in this Exodus passage, God wants the Israelites to take only what they need but not more. God is teaching us that If we were to store up all of our gifts from God, we would be less likely to walk with him or to rely on him. When we ask God for what we need, and he supplies that need, we are reminded of his constant presence and grace. Thinking about God in this way keeps him right in the room with us, all the time. He is always with us.

Holy God, I am so grateful for all you provide: your Holy Spirit living within me, Jesus Christ providing the perfect example of sinless life on earth, and your presence everywhere at every moment. I am truly blessed to be a part of the family of God. Amen

Exodus 16:11-19. 2 Corinthians 12:9

If we read the Exodus passage and really think carefully about it, you will see a wonderful plan for living. Realizing God will help you provide what you need and then don't store up more unless for the Sabbath. Remember the importance of the Sabbath--a day of rest. Need in the most important word. What you need and no more--no excesses. Wants are our downfall. They complicate our lives and, like a drug, make us want more. As I age, i really hope to start downsizing. I find it very difficult. I really feel as if I need all I have. I probably don't really, but so far have done little to change things.

Grace in Sorrow

(Focus: someone whose parents have died.

It is just amazing how in my weakness God’s grace is always so strong. As I continue to grow and transform in my faith journey, I realized  that my weakness is nothing to be ashamed of. God’s strength is made perfect by my weakness because He takes 7my situation where  strength is lacking to demonstrate the greatness of His power.…

Exodus 16:11-19/2 Corinthians 12:9

The Exodus reading today reminds me of the time when I was living in Japan. I remember being surprised at the homes and apartments there. A typical upper middle class home was very small, simply furnished, chow tables without chairs, and tatami mats throughout. To conserve space they would typically shop daily. Everything was always clean and tidy. I was, and still am, fascinated with this lifestyle, especially coming from a country with an obsession with space, large homes, and things…it seems to never be enough. I find, as I get older, I spend a great deal of time trying to simplify my life. The gap between what I want and what I need narrows daily.…

Exodus 16:11-19/2 Corinthians 12:9

Manna has always been a mystery to me even going back to Sunday school days as a kid. The concept of there only being enough for one day blends nicely with Paul’s word from

the Lord in response to his “thorn in the flesh.” I suppose we have all experienced times when it seemed the task ahead was way beyond our power to accomplish only to come out the other side of the ordeal intact. The gift of God’s grace is indeed like manna - just in time, just enough and there again when you need it.

Prayer - God of provision and grace; thank You for Your ever present protection and the extra measure of…
