A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, November 1

1Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

"The Lord does not look at the things people look at". This is both reassuring and scary to me. It is reassuring that God knows my intent and my longing, and my desire to do the right thing. He doesn't mark me down for wearing the same clothes year after year or for not really knowing what is in fashion anymore. He probably doesn't care about that extra five or ten pounds. He knows what I care about, and what I am seeking, because he himself put it there in my heart. But he also knows when I sin, and knows if I am not being fully honest with myself or with others. This is just as important. God knows us, through and through.

Holy Lord, I am so thankful for your grace, and your eternal forgiveness. I am truly sorry for the times I make the wrong choice. I want to do better. Lord, grant me a clean heart, I pray. Amen

1 Samuel 16:7

Like Samuel, I have often easily judged too quickly, and by the wrong standards. I have learned, often the hard way, to withhold any judgement about a person until I actually see what they say and do. Aside from that, I will confess that knowing that God knows my inner most thoughts is humbling and I have often asked for forgiveness for those thoughts.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I do a better job for you always. May I judge properly and put out of my heart improper thoughts. Amen

1 Samuel 16:7

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

Jesus’s heart represents both the divine and human love that Jesus has for his Father and for us, which led to his willingness to lay down his life for us. Is it possible to do good works and have a wrong heart.(maybe). Is it also possible to do something wrong but still have a right heart.(maybe)God will always be pleased to use a person with a good hear…

1Samuel 16:7 The old saying, “You can’t tell a book by its cover,” is apropos here. We will never be as good at seeing the inner person as God does, but that should be our goal as believers. This can lead to joy or disappointment, but more importantly it keeps us grounded in what matters. A bit of introspection is in order as well. Am I sharing myself with others or some image I would rather project. I may fool some, but can never fool God and I we be held accountable for all deceit.

Prayer - Lord, help me to share my true self to all in my path and help me to see deeper than the surface in others…
