A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, June 5

Matthew 4:4

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus is being tempted by Satan to turn stones into bread and feed himself. But Jesus recognizes this as a trap, and does not want to follow Satan’s advice. I believe Jesus is saying, “I am not here on this earth to eat bread, but to obey my Father. He will give me what I need.” When I am able to turn aside my earthly “wants” and focus on my spiritual “needs”, I will be headed in the right direction, toward God.

Holy Lord, I am thankful for your constant presence and providence. Help me to be wary of the “quick-fix”, and always turn first to you. Amen

Matthew 4:4

Before Jesus began his ministry, he went into the desert and fasted. Satan thought he had caught Jesus at a vulnerable time. Jesus was hungry so Satan offered food. Jesus’ reply to Satan can speak to us today. We are often caught up in our need for more and more possessions. Jesus tells us we don’t need things. We need the word of God. Jesus knew his scripture and obeyed it. We need to know scripture better than we do. That is what this group of transformers does for me.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I use your words to guide me in my journey. Amen

Matthew 4:4

Of the many spiritual disciplines available to us to grow in faith, fasting is not one I have given serious thought to trying on a regular or even intermittent basis. I have fasted from specific things, typically during Lent, but this is hardly the same as a fast for the sake of spiritual formation. Reading this verse today, as the introduction to a week of contemplating hunger for God has put the thought in my head to look into how to plan and execute a proper fast. No doubt Satan will show up with the temptation to deviate, but that will be part of the battle.

Matthew 4:4

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

One of the best ways to defend ourselves against the enemy is to know the word of God and speak it aloud against the lies which Satan bombards us with. This is exactly what Jesus did when Satan tempted him in the wildness. When the enemy tells us that God does not love us and that we will never amount to anything go to war defending him using his very words as our weapon and defense . Talk back to him just as Jesus did.even when we are…
