A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, June 10

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I have been preoccupied recently, and this morning I am finding it impossible to concentrate on this particular UR devotion. But the scripture speaks to me and what I have been struggling with. God sends us what we need. His Holy Spirit is so busy! 😊😇😊. We really do not need to store up things here on earth. This will not help us. We need to continue to seek God, to listen for Him, and to try to recognize the nudging of his Holy Spirit.

Holy Lord, today I woke up knowing you love me. I am so grateful. You never give up, and this sustains me. Thank-you and amen.

Matthew 6:19-21

If you ask my husband, he will tell you I am a boarderline hoarder. I have a very hard time letting go of "things," When the grandchildren were younger, I always had whatever it was that they needed for a school project. They knew who to ask. They are all gown now and although there are great grandchildren coming I don't think I need to be the supplier any longer. I know I should begin downsizing my "stuff." Three piles--throw away, donate, and keep. Although I know what I have to do, it is very hard for me because I remember where it all came from and who gave it to me.

Prayer: Gracious God, all my stuff…

Matthew 6:19-21

I do not interpret Jesus’ admonition about storing treasures in heaven rather than on earth an invitation to live in poverty. Earning all one can and accumulating assets can be a blessing when earning is no longer occurring, relieving one’s loved ones the responsibility to provide for them. What is left when when we pass on can bless our children and others. Blessing those we love is certainly a way of storing treasures in heaven. Storing is not the same as hoarding.

Prayer - Gracious God, we all want what is best for those we love. Please help us recognize the important distinction between reasonably providing for the future and consumerist greed. Let Jesus’ example of selfless giving…
