A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, July 20

Ecclesiastes 3: 9-13

What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil- this is the gift of God.

These verses remind me that God does not intend for any of us to be miserable or to suffer at our work. Honest hard work is meant to bring us a sense of satisfaction. It brings food to the table and time for rest. Just like God set eternity in our human hearts, he also gave me the desire to be productive.

Holy Lord, help me to see the positives of my work, as I know I am doing what you intended for me to do. Help me to do your will as I move through my day. Amen

Ecclesiastes 3:9-13

What gain has the worker from his toil? I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.

I have chosen verse 11. We know that through him all thing…

Ecclesiastes 3:9–13 Neither of my parents graduated from high school, yet they married, owned a home, had a child, and worked at jobs that people today would never aspire to. Mom was a cook in a school kitchen, and dad delivered oil and did janitorial work. They told wonderful stories about their jobs and the people they worked with who became friends. They were happy and enjoyed the life they had. As their daughter, I was happy and enjoyed all they provided – and they provided many things – even a college education but not without sacrifice. They taught me that I should enjoy whatever I ended up doing with my life – and I have. They knew and I know…

Ecclesiastes 3:9-13 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil – THIS IS THE GIFT OF GOD.

This is a gift that many people never receive. Few things can be more satisfying than having work that you look forward to each day. It’s tempting to say that everyone could have this gift if they made the right decisions, but the truth is that many cannot control their situation. I’m struggling to see the gift in this except for the lucky few.

Dear Lord, help me to understand these verses. Amen.

Ecclesiastes 3:9-13

13: That each of them may eat and drink and find satisfaction on all their toil---this is the gift of God.

My life is a gift from God. If I can do a good job with all that He has given to me, I will find satisfaction in everything I do. Every day I will work for God enjoying what I do and knowing that it is what God wants of me.

Dearest Lord, you have given me so much to work with in this life and yes, you have sent challenges my way. I know that this life is fleeting, and I will do my best to honor you in all that I do. In Jesus name…

Ecclesiastes 3: 9-13

Solomon wrote, “no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” We do know this, however. From the time of temptation and the Fall, it was appointed for humankind to work for food, shelter and clothing. While a consequence, work was not a curse. Work well done can produce a sense of contentment and gratitude toward God, the Author of our gifts and talents. Would that I could live with the attitude of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection who cheerfully toiled in the kitchen of his monastery in Paris for the glory of God. This was a model of work that can benefit all Christians.

Prayer - God of work, grant to me an…
