A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, February 12

Writer: ontrakkontrakk

2Timothy 4:2-3

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage —with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

This scripture is so valuable to us, here and now, in our present day and culture. If we could manage to get across to others what knowing Jesus has done for us, in our own individual lives, things might be different. But we don’t consistently do this well. Or at least, not enough do it well. So, many in the world continue to look elsewhere to hear, “what their itching ears want to hear.”

Holy Lord, make me a mirror of your love, a light which comes from your light. Help me to be open and clear with others about what you mean to me. I am yours, and I am grateful. Amen

2 Timothy 4:2-3

This is so true in these times, more so than ever. Folks are “not listening to sound doctrine, they are following their own desires with teachers that are telling him what they are itching to hear”. That is so much of our current society and regretfully is all too familiar. I wish I was stronger in my efforts to proclaim the gospel. I live in my own little bubble and don’t reach out of my comfort zone the way I should. I desire to be better. I just need a very strong nudge.

Heavenly Father, forgive me for being hesitant to tell others of your love and grace. Please help me to be better. Amen.

2 Timothy 4:2-3

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.

Paul, who is going to die soon asked Timothy to carry on the torch and to fight and spread the gospel. I don’t think people understand the strictness of the bible because they want to worship God in a way that suits their own needs. There are pastors who make people feel like God can be worshipped in whatever way suits them,…

2Timothy 4:2-3

I used to think that setting an example, attending church, and teaching was enough for me to do to spread the Christian message. I know it is not. People need to hear first-hand about God's love for everyone. Many churches/denominations have lots of work to do to counter the damage they have done that has turned people away from church. The many clergy scandals, the abuse of power and money has damaged church attendance and membership for many. I have good friends who were wonderful and active church members leave their church saying the bureaucracy of churches today do more harm and do little for church growth. The greater church's focus on financial support and the filli…

2Timothy 4:2-3

Don’t get me started. Even as church attendance falls, too many of those who attend cannot articulate what they believe and why they believe it. I do not mean this in a legalistic way, but doctrine matters in terms of forming a Christian worldview and doctrine has been neglected in Protestant traditions for decades. Our Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Jewish friends do a much better job of training up their children in the faith with well-organized and continuous catechesis throughout their school years. Protestants seem comfortable using Scripture to encourage, but heaven forbid we offend anyone by correcting or (gasp!) rebuking them for actions contrary to what Scripture clearly teaches. In recent years both the Catholic and Orthodox…
