A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, February 10

Matthew 9: 27-31

In this passage, two blind men approach Jesus, and Jesus restores their sight, after asking them if they believed. Jesus touches their eyes, and tells them not to tell anyone about what has happened.

It confuses me to hear Jesus tell the men to keep quiet. After all, he has gone many other places with crowds, and must be gaining some notoriety at this point. Is it really because Jesus does not want crowds gathering wherever he is? Does God really want his miracles kept quiet, kept secret? Jesus has to want his actions talked about- otherwise how does the Gospel get spread? I will ponder this today, and pray for some clarity.

Holy Father, I know you want all men to come to you. Why should anyone keep quiet? Help me to understand what I need to understand from your Word. Amen

Matthew: 9-28-30 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, do you believe that I am able to do this They said to him, Yes, Lord Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it done to you. And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, See that no one knows about it.

Jesus was not asking people if they wanted him to heal their ailments or solve their sinful ways. Jesus did not heal any person who did not want to be healed. He did not heal those who did not believe in him. Jesus taught the people they would have what they truly believe…

Matthew 9: 27-31

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” 28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

The blind men remind me how important it is to be persistent in my prayers. To look to Jesus for the healing power that comes from my faith in him. Jesus is a merciful God and one that looks after me always. He works through the Holy Spirit to heal my heart and mind and to help me know him better. i just need to remember to pray and listen.

Matthew 9:27-31

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”,

In the past readings I thought that Jesus knew that those that he healed had strong enough faith to be healed, but in this case he seemed to be testing their faith. According to your faith be healed. Did this mean that if one’s faith was not complete they would be partially healed or not at all? Just saying they had faith was not enough, the healing proved it.

Dear Lord, sometimes we play lip service to you and repeat words without really feeling them. Give me the conviction of my words. Amen.

Matthew 9:29 - “Then he touched their eyes and said, ‘According to your faith let it be done to you.’”

The story here is more complex than what is on the surface. As the others we have worked through, it seems to hinge on faith. The blind men call Jesus “Son of David.” Despite their physical blindness they are not spiritually blind. Additionally, in answering Jesus’ question as to whether they believed He could heal them, they addressed Him as “Lord.” This is why Jesus says, “According to your faith let it be done to you.”

The “Messianic Secret” issue pops up again here. Jesus’ unparalleled compassion compelled Him to heal the sick, but His core mission was to bring…

2021-0210 Wednesday, Daily Devotion - Matthew 9:27-31

Matthew 9:30-31 (NIV)

30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

I have wondered why two blind men spread Jesus although Jesus seriously warned them not to tell about His healing. Today, what I found is that the encounter with Jesus is a thing that people couldn’t keep it as a secret because it is too big to keep it as a secret in our hearts. Jesus might think that that time is not a good time to spread Him in town because His timing was not there yet.…
