A Daily Devotion for Wednesday, December 4

Romans 12:16

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position (or willing to do menial work). Do not be conceited.

It amazes me again this morning to see how accurately human nature can be described in a book written so many hundreds of years ago. We still are a prideful people, shying away from those we consider “less” than ourselves. This sort of pride makes it impossible to live in a sincere, Christ-like manner. We seem to want to find all kinds of ways to differentiate ourselves from others rather than finding and realizing the ways we are the same.

Lord God, help me to see my pride at play, getting in my way and causing me to withhold help and support. Guide me to always be loving, never conceited. Amen

Romans 12:16

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud , but be willing to associate with the people of lower position. Do not be conceited.

It doesn’t feel good to make a mistake, but it’s not possible for me  to always get it right. So when I  make a mistake, own up to it and apologize without making excuses. Dismissing my mistakes makes me seem arrogant. While owning up to my  mistakes even when it doesn’t feel good will help me to grow more confident. I had such an experience at the dentist office. Monday I was scheduled for a 10:00 am appt which I could  not make . Calling  to make…

Romans 12:16

Back in the early 90's I encouraged a young family friend to try AA for his problems. After some encouragement he did, but his response was "I'm glad I'm not like those people." He was like them, of course, but he could not let himself believe he was like "those" people. Many years later, my daughter finally attended an AA meeting and her first response to me was "Wow, everyone was just like me." They were ordinary people with a problem they were trying to solve. The biggest difference here is the young man still has problems and thankfully my daughter has conquered most of her demons. (prayers always for that to continue) How sad that tha…

Romans 12:16

I believe that God wants us to be humble people, and to put others ahead of ourselves. We should not put ourselves above others or look down upon people. The notion that someone is beneath you because of their intellect, socio-economic category, ethnic background, etc. is just wrong . Truly, we are all the same…children of God, nothing more nothing less. My father always set a good example for this. He welcomed people of all sorts of backgrounds into his home and business. Helping those who had challenges in their lives. He always treated them kindly and with respect. Joe the painter, Harry the butcher, Donnie the wayward teenager, and a host of others that God put …

Romans 12:16

“At least I’m not like . . .” It seems no matter how badly we behave, the excuse is there is always someone “worse” than us. The original sin of pride runs deep in our soul, but the light of Christ can obliterate it, if only we let it. I have found that in circumstances in which I tempered ego and pride to try to stray out

of my social bubble, it was more often than not, worth the effort, I learned something and was made better for the experience.

Prayer - God of social harmony, help me set aside fixed ideas and prejudices I may have about people different than I or tasks I reject as “beneath…
