Romans 8:1-6
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
I can’t help but believe this: if we all spent our time focusing on, learning about and contributing to what is positive in the world and in our culture, we would be spending more time in God’s will and less time dwelling on Satan’s successes. Negative trends in our world and our culture are Satan’s territory. I do not want to spend any extra time there.
Holy Lord, help me to see the good in your creation, especially in those around me. Help me to find things to read and to study and to enjoy which bring me closer to you. Help me to continue to grow closer to you through your Word. Amen

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
This verse caused me to think about my own thoughts and just how many were useless and not in agreement with God’s word. I raced from one thought to another and most of them centered around me. Some people live to eat, others eat to live. A position somewhere in the middle of this spectrum is probably what is best for body, mind and spirit. I need better discipline to apply the same principle to following the news. Every once in a while I think I will fast from reading the comments to news stories or fast from reading news stories bearing an obvious agenda or even fast from reading the news altogether since I am bombarded with headlines every time I turn on my computer. As my frequent references to the culture attest, I have not yet found that position somewhere in the middle of staying informed while not being riled up. Perhaps…
