A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, September 9

James 4:7-10

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

When I read these verses, I am drawn to the verse in James which says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” For me, getting closer to God has to begin and end with prayer. The more I seek God, the closer He will be to me, and the better I can know and see his will for me. Prayers are not answered in any predictable way, but we can be certain our prayers are heard. And the more I am in communion with God, the better I can understand and learn from what does happen.

Holy Lord, I know that I am drawing closer to you because you are putting people in my path. Thank-you for walking with me. Thank-you for keeping us safe. Amen

PS: earlier today, I reached into a wild blackberry bush, and a bee flew at me fast and stung my eyelid. Wow, that hurt a lot, and I was kind of scared about what might happen. But after a half hour or so it hurt a lot less, my vision was fine, and I don’t think it swelled up at all! I said a prayer of thanks to God, and thought of Kay L. and how she taught me to say thank-you in every circumstance. ❤️

Humble prayer

(Focus: FAMILIES longing to be reunited

Matthew 6:6

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Jesus spoke against those who prayed loudly just so they could be seen and praised by others. He called such people hypocrites..in our fast-paced world, finding quiet moments with God can feel like an impossible task. Yetthese private encounters with our God are necessary for spiritual growth and well-being. Just as any meaningful relationship requires dedicated time and attention, my relationship with God will thrive when I intentionally set aside time to be alone with…

James 4:7-10 “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” As powerful as Old Scratch can be, he is a powerless wimp when faced with God, the Father Almighty. When the devil says, “Who do you think you are? Your knees won’t carry you. What about that new pain in your shoulder? Doesn’t that twinge in your back mean you should give up?” God, with whom I am walking and to whom I keep talking simply says, “I’ll take care and of you.”

Prayer - Thank you, Lord for being my companion on the Way and a rebuke to the devil. Amen
