A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, October 10

Hebrews 11:1-3

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

This is such a beautiful passage. How does this relate to the faith of a child? I think this verse points out that true faith does not require a full and complete understanding, and does not require all of the details. We are to accept and have faith and at the same time, not know all of the "hows and whys". This is how children believe what their parents tell them. If I trust God, I can believe what he tells me to be true. Jesus told us the truth, and we have faith in all he has said and done.

Lord God, again I give my thanks to you for sending your Son Jesus to teach us. I trust Him as I trust you and as I trust the Holy Spirit, to move me along in truth. Help me to move on when I get bogged down in details. I am yours. Amen

Hebrews 11:1-3

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

It is difficult to believe God and hold on year after year waiting for his word to come to pass. The Bible gives us promises , hope and encouragement and especially trust. God chooses to do good and to give us joy. The devil chooses to do wrong and to make us miserable. We can remain patient believing God’s promises or…

Hebrews 11:1-3

The human ego is an immensely large and fragile thing. The enlightenment put so much emphasis on science as the truth and the human mind as arbiter of that truth that faith became marginalized in elite circles. Centuries later, that arrogance has filtered into all social strata in the West where skeptics and atheists, even those with very little education or intelligence, ridicule people of faith as having “imaginary friends” and believing in “fairy tales.” Their hubris robs them of the joy and freedom that childlike faith can give. I distill these verses into, “I do not believe because I see. I see because I believe.”

Hebrews 11:1-3

Several years ago, I was part of a Cantata called “In His Hands.” The first song was “The faith of a Child.” The song emphasizes coming to God humbly, eagerly with trust and to accept and believe. As adults, we often try to figure difficult things out and have a need to understand everything. But we should remember that it is then we need our faith in the unseen the most. When we have our doubts, we need to be more like children and trust in Him.

Prayer: Gracious God, Our world today is so full or war and devastation that it is overwhelming. I must trust that those who love and believe in you can be pa…
