A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, May 27

1Timothy 4:4-5

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

I am often amazed that certain foods were ever discovered, or that certain parts of plants were found to have ‘hidden’ useful properties. Since Kay has been home, I have been finding small round dark husks on the floor in the bathroom and in the laundry room. I assumed this was from some prevalent weed on the grounds of the nursery. When I asked Kay about it, she said they are buckwheat hulls. They are the preferred mulch at this large, wholesale nursery! When I looked up buckwheat, I learned all kinds of things. The seed itself is nutritious and gluten free, the hulls are beautiful and effective as mulch, and they stay where you put them. The plant is related to rhubarb!!! God did not and does not make mistakes. There are so many things for us to learn and so much to be thankful for. There are no mistakes in God’s creation.

Holy Lord, thank you for your many blessings. Your creation is rich and abundant with mysteries and new discoveries to be made. Your grace is unimaginable. I am so very thankful. Amen.

1 Timothy 4:1-6.

Yes, everything God has made is good, but he didn't make us all the same. He didn't make all of us perfect physically and mentally either. Lots of children come into this world with both mental and physical problems, but they are still one of God's good creations. Many suffer challenges late in life, but they are still God's good creations. There is a wonderful ad on TV lately that I love. People of all ages talk briefly about their disabilities and how they do not define them. The ad ends with a young man who very slowly and clearly says, "Disability is NOT a DIRTY WORD."

Prayer: Gracious God, Help the world see everyone as you…

1Timothy 4:4-5

The contrarian in me cannot help but think of things like fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, termites, cockroaches poison ivy, kudzu, and weeds of all kinds. These parts of creation remain a mystery to me, but then again I do not have the mind of God. Rejecting people, on the other hand, is something that is regularly done by those who operate on the extreme ends of our turbulent cultural spectrum. Lost in the vitriol spewed by both the “right” and the “left” are the vast majority of us somewhere in the middle, trying to find a way to navigate a complex world that is a home to vulnerable people as well as privileged people, people striving for a better…

1 Timothy 4: 4-5

This makes me think about the adage “God doesn’t make junk”. A few years ago we made a visit to Arizona and went to the Grand Canyon. We walked down a path among some trees to one of the edges at the rim. As we emerged from the trees, there before us was one of the most magnificent views I had ever seen, so magnificent it took my breath away and I actually wept. I turned to my husband and the first thing out of my mouth was, “how could anyone not believe?” While we are not perfect in our nature, we are part of a perfect and wonderful creation and for that I praise God.
