A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, June 18

1 John 3:18-19

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: (If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.)

I cannot keep anything from God. If I am not acting in love and in truth, He is the first to know about it. The Holy Spirit will help me to recognize this untruth sooner than I would on my own. If I claim to love my neighbor but am judgemental and harsh behind their back, am I living in God’s truth? If I argue a point in irritation and frustration simply because that is how I am feeling, am I living in God’s truth? I need help from the Holy Spirit, and then I need to act with that help.

Holy Lord, help me to see and feel when I am veering away from your truth. I want to do better. I am blessed to know your truth, and I want to fully live in it. Amen

1 John 3:18-19

Like James, John is reminding us that real love is action, not just words. This is the truth we need to remember. Help those in need. Be generous of your time and talents. God knows the motive behind our actions. When we try and think we fall short, God knows we have tried and that is what he wants from us.

Prayer: Gracious God, I understand what you want me to do. Help me fulfill spreading your love to others. Amen

1 John 3:18-19

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;

If   we truly love each other, it will show in our actions regardless of what we say, how we flatter people, etc. Words of love and kindness are meaningless when the actions attached to them are the exact opposite. Our deeds as believers must align with the same deeds and love of God. His gift of the Holy Spirit within each of us, is his personal gift of armor. A simple act of caring is a powerful expression of…

1 John 3:18-19

An endless flow of Christian words may come out of a person’s mouth, but if those words are not lived out or supported by Christian action, it is all in vain. It is the old adage about walking the talk that is operative here. I need the discipine to put into action the teachings of Christ in my daily life. We often speak of the heart/head dilemma, but the true fulfillment of the Christian life also includes the hands and feet.

Prayer - Lord, Your truth tells me You are greater than my heart. Let this knowledge spur me to action that does not draw attention to me, but shows the world Your love. Amen
