A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, January 6

Isaiah 42:5-9

This is what God the LORD says—

the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it:

“I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;

I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind,

to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

“I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.

See, the former things have taken place,

and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”

When Tom and I walked on the Camino de Santiago, there were many times we received unsolicited help from people along the way. There were even times when an inanimate object showed us the way! I am remembering one day in particular which was very hot, sunny, dry, and the dirt road was between a pear orchard and some other crop. A pear had fallen to the ground and as it looked fine, I took a bite. It was bitter and sour and I literally had to spit it out. I left the pear on the dirt road. We soon came to a crossroads and noticed we were off the path on our GPS. We tried a few turns to correct, but still were not going where we were supposed to be. After at least 30 minutes of wandering, we found ourselves again on a dirt road between crops. I looked down and there was a pear in the road with a big bite out of it. I first thought, “Wow, what are the chances someone else tried one of these pears today!?!” Then I realized it was my own pear, and we were now headed back in 100% the wrong direction. We were then able to stop, turn around, and find the correct path before starting off again. This was just one of many helps from God that we received. God is good, and I believe that when we keep our hearts and minds open, we will know His blessings.

Holy Lord, I know you are in control, and I am not. Help me to see the times I try to control an outcome when I should be turning the problem over to you. Amen

Isaiah 42:5-9

“I will take hold of your hand”, this phrase sings to me. I depend on God daily to take my hand, protect me, guide me, and love me (even when I am unlovable). God is always there, my role is to trust Him always.

Dear God, thank you for being my guide, for taking my hand. Please help me to cast out any doubt I have and trust You with all my heart and soul. Amen

Isaiah 42:5-9

As Isaiah speaks of the Messiah as a servant, I see that we are also His (the Messiah's) servant. We are His hands and feet and are to be doing His work here today among our people. We trust that He is with us at all times guiding us on our journey.

Prayer: Gracious God, You have been with me on this long journey and have helped me so many times find ways to be of service to you. Thank you, AMEN

In God’s hands

(Focus: to trust God’s Guidance

Isaiah 42:6

“I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations,

The servant in Isaiah 42:6 whom God makes these promises, is understood to be the  Messiah, Jesus. We also are to be a covenant (A covenant is a formal agreement or promise to do or not do a particular act for the people and a light for the nations) (I,learned from more study that there are five foundational covenants that God makes with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, before establishing the new…

 Isaiah 42:5-9

“I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.” In order for my hand to by taken by the Lord to guide me in righteousness, I must avoid making anything else in my life an idol. I read an article yesterday about some Christian sects that forbid any artwork in their sanctuaries or even stained glass windows in the belief that this is a form of idolatry. While I disagree with their position, I understand their motives. Where I believe their actions are worth emulating is in the rigorous attempt to focus on God in my daily living and not be distracted by the world’s idols.
