A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, February 25

James 1:5-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

When we are caught in a difficult position, with a decision to make, praying to God may not be the first thing that comes to mind. For me, when I have a tough decision, both “choices” have a whole wardrobe of feelings attached to them. I can get tangled up in imagining all of the potential outcomes and repercussions, along with how I will feel living with each one. Why don’t I immediately turn to God? I am not sure- maybe I am distracted to the point of losing focus- maybe I am allowing myself to be “blown and tossed by the wind.” I can do better, and be more consistent in my prayer life. I know that when I am able to turn to God, comfort and wisdom does follow. There is no doubt about that for me.

Holy God, I am so thankful to you for your presence, for your permanence and for your consistent love and guidance. Forgive me when I forget or fail to turn to you first. Amen

James 1:5-8

Wisdom is knowledge and that leads to the ability to make good decisions. This means we must start with prayer. Our conversations with God should always lead us to making wise decisions, not like someone who is unsure and, therefore, is indecisive.

Prayer: Gracious God, I know I must speak with you about everything, especially important decisions. AMEN

James 1:5-8

James addresses indecision at several levels in this passage, but the core message is reliance on our Creator to guide us. We are reminded of God’s impartiality as the One “who gives generously to all without finding fault.” We are also cautioned about the unstable feelings that doubt can bring, likened to being “a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” Without belief, there will be no experience of God’s comfort and assurance. This cannot be ordered up by our own will. Our most fundamental decision is whether or not we believe. Everything else that follows, easy or difficult, painful or pleasurable, sad or happy, flows from this.
