A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, February 11

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

In this life, we can find ourselves serving many masters. Our boss, coworkers, our business, our family, even our spouse can end up having too much power over our heart and mind. God needs to be our master, and all that we do, all of the service and love and work we provide for others should be ultimately in the service of God. If we ever have a doubt as to whether to proceed, this might be a useful “reframe”.

Holy Lord, be with me and my family today. You

know our hearts. Amen

Matthew 6:24

I have always found this verse difficult. I often feel guilty when I spend money on things I want but may not necessarily need. I know I am not extravagent or wasteful. I'm sure Jesus didn't say this to make me feel guilty, although that guilt keeps me from loving THINGS too much. I understnd the balance needed.

Prayer: Gracious God, You know I serve you with love and would never choose otherwise. AMEN

As in Timothy, “the love of money is a root of all evil”. So many put money as their highest priority, I think that love of money has destroyed more lives than enhance. While money is necessary it should never be the center of our world. Put God first and you will never go wrong!

Dear Lord, thank you for your love and all you provide, knowing that by putting you first our needs will be met. Amen

So, simply put our careers, our bank balances, and whatever else is important in our lives, must never take priority. We naturally want to have enough to eat, suitable clothes to wear, and a decent place to live. We must be aware of developing a love of money. But I want both  is a common reaction when faced with a choice between two desirable things. There is nothing wrong when people can build wealth in this world, this is…

Matthew 6:24

The depth of faith I have seen among very poor people in Nicaragua and Thailand is a stark reminder that serving the god of material wealth as is common in our culture is very thin gruel in comparison. Money can provide pleasure and comfort, but it cannot provide joy. This is found only in serving God in Christ.

Prayer - Thank you, Lord for the joy that comes from putting my faith before my bank account. Amen
