A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 26

Psalm 31:14-15

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.”

My times are in your hands; delivery me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

I am struck by these words, “My times are in your hands.” Why is it so difficult for me to live this out? My planning and arranging and organizing of details must seem ridiculous to God sometimes. But I also know there is something to be said for being prepared (like a good Scout). Often the preparation for an event is as enjoyable as the event itself. I need to think about this more. God wants me present, in the here and now, doing his work. If I go through my work day planning tomorrow, there is less energy available for those I am helping today.

Lord help me to see and appreciate the work you set before me. Tomorrow will take care of itself. My energy and attention is needed here, now. Tomorrow will come, according to your will. Amen

Psalm 118:19-24 Psalm 31:14-15

The little boy in today's story was so right. He was focused on today and only when that was done would he think about tomorrow. This reminds me of a co-worker and her family. They had a cottage on a small lake in central NH. Clocks were not to be found anywhere. Watches were not necessary. You slept until you awoke. You went to bed when your body said sleep. You ate when you were hungry and swam when you were hot. It was nice to concentrate on the moment and not count them down as they passed. This let every moment and activity be a special piece of the day. We have never pra…

Psalm 31:14-15

Today’s message is good and timely…I have fewer days ahead of me than behind me on this earth. “My times are in Your hands…” Now being retired and being out of the daily stress of work and trying to cram so much into each week, I find it much easier to take in each day. Each day becomes easier and easier to manage. The “checklist” is simple…praise God for another day with those I love and care about, seek to make a difference on this earth, pray sincerely each day, be thankful to God for all my earthly blessings and for salvation…God will take care of the rest.

Dear God, thank you for placing my times in your…

Psalm 31:14-15

But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!

David’s honesty about his pain is striking: for  my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing, recalling his failing strength and bones wasting away (v10);his declaration of faith reveals David’s confidence in God’s control over his times – literally every moment of his life, . Psalm 31 points us directly to Jesus, showing perfect trust in the Father even in His most excruciating moment on the cross. When Jesus quoted V5, he demonstrated complete…

Psalm 31:14-15 Time is something humankind must grapple with. Lacking the eternal perspective of God, we become slaves to clock and calendar. So much to do, so little time. This points up for me the opportunity for spiritual formation the pilgrimage Becky and I will take starting next week offers. There will be no schedule, no meetings, no deadlines, no “pressing business”, no reports due, no work-related Zoom calls, etc. Our task will simply be to put our time in God’s hands, walk from point A to point B, listen for the Holy Spirit and try to grow in grace. The privilege of being able to do this is not lost on me. There are so many, from all walks of…
