A Daily Devotion for Tuesday, August 18

Philippians 1:20-21 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

These verses are a beautiful prayer I can say to God whenever I need courage. Paul was in prison, undoubtedly going through frightening physical and emotional challenges. I haven’t had to face anything like that, but these words bring me back to an important truth. The truth is we have been promised eternal life with God. No matter what comes my way, I must remember I am on this earth as a servant, and when I am finished, I will be with God.

Heavenly Father, I hope and pray you are pleased with your creation. I am your servant on this earth. I am at peace, knowing I will be with you for all eternity. Amen

Paul is a wonderful example of how to live a successful Christian life. His whole purpose in life was to speak out boldly for Christ  and to become more like him. Because I truly believe, Christ i…

Philippians 1:20-21

Speaking boldly for Christ may, at times, require a thick skin. Paul wrote he did not expect to be shamed and hoped he would not, but ultimately he declares that does not matter. Better to suffer ridicule than to deny Jesus. I am once again reminded of the Catholic Litany of Humility written by Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val. It is worth looking up and keeping a copy in one’s prayer journal.

Prayer - O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, please hear my prayer. May I remain stalwart and true to Your Word, Your precepts and Your way of living in a world that tries to reject You. Lend me the perfect mix of boldness and humility…
