A Daily Devotion for Thursday, October 30

Matthew 14:25-31

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

Psalm 63:8

I cling to you;

your right hand upholds me.

Jesus calls us to follow him, and promises to hold us close. When I let go of Jesus, I can sense it. I would never ever willingly turn away from Him, but sometimes in my “busy-ness” I forget to squeeze his hand and check in.

Jesus holds me close,

like a hand in my own hand.

Walking by my side.

Holy Lord, your constant and unwavering presence is such a part of me, help me to never take you for granted. You have given me my very life, all of my hope and joy. Help me to shine your light every day, that others may see you. Amen

Matthew 14:25-31. Psalm 63:8

This is one of the stories I tell to my Nursing Home Bible Study attendees. We have Peter joining Jesus on the water. All was going well until the wind and waves distracted Jesus and he took his eyes off Jesus. Jesus reached out to Peter and took his hand as he will us if we look to him during those scary moments. This story is our reminder to keep our eyes on the one who is ready to help us, not on all the distractions around us.

Prayer: Gracious God, Hopefully, I will remember to grab for your hand in those times of troubles. AMEN

HOLD AND STEP

(Focus: Gratitude for a lesson a young person has taught us.

Psalm 63:8

My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

How do I cling to God in my everyday life. Most important for me is  by reading and obeying God’s Word. By clinging  to God through worshiping Him alone. Acknowledge Him as the only true God and refuse to listen to the voices of false teachings  . Money, material possessions, power, position, and even social media – none of these things deserve our devotion. Only God—the One who created us, and who saves and heals us. He deserves our love, praise, and worship clinging  to God by refusing to…

Matthew 14:25-31/Psalm 63:8

In the words of the old hymn; “I need thee, O I need thee. Every hour I need thee.” Inevitably, when I take my eyes off Jesus, even fleetingly, I end up in a bad or difficult place. There are countless things, major and minor, that happen in this world that are analogous to the wind and waves that took Peter’s attention away from Jesus. I must learn to do a better job at staying focused on Him so that I may carry out God’s will for me instead of being distracted by the schemes of Satan.

Prayer - Jesus, the storms that rage about me too often distract me from the sanctifying work necessary to become…
