A Daily Devotion for Thursday, May 21

Luke 24:44-45
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding that they might comprehend the scriptures.
I am reading Pilgrim’s Progress right now, and really enjoying it. It is not at all what I had expected. Last night the two Pilgrims, Christian and Hopeful, were discussing whether man can know Jesus by his own efforts, but then agreed God must make Jesus known to us- we cannot do this on our own. The verses from Luke this morning brought this concept back to me. Jesus needed to “open their understanding” before He finally left the disciples. And this also explains our need for the indwelling Spirit of God. He leaves us His own Spirit as our helper.
Holy God, I am reminded today I am nothing without you. I would have no understanding of you except that you have lead me and guided me. I ask you to help me to grow closer, and help me to increase my understanding and my love for you. You and only you can provide this increase. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen
