A Daily Devotion for Thursday, June 14

John 17:17

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

This is part of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples. He goes on to include all of those who will come to know him, and so come to know God. In a previous discussion, we had talked about the beginning of the book of John: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. So, we can conclude from this that Jesus is the Word, and the Word is truth. Every word that Jesus spoke is so important, and so special. I am so thankful for those who took the care and the time to write down everything they heard and remembered. This has made it possible for us to know Jesus, and so to know the truth.

Holy Father, I am thankful beyond words for how you have blessed your creation. The gift of Jesus is pure love. I am yours. Amen

John 17:17

In Jesus’ prayer for his disciples, he echos what we are learning this week. We are learning his words are truth as we take part in our group, just as Jesus wanted the disciples to teach others. As Jesus said, the word is the truth.

Prayer: Gracious God, Help and guide us as we study and learn your truth. Amen

Certainly, as I understand sanctification, the context is perfect. The definition I learned for sanctification is the process of becoming more like Jesus over one’s lifetime for the benefit of others. Jesus is the Word and the the Word is Truth. There is indeed absolute Truth even in the face of the post-modern obsession with individual “truths” which are occasionally diametrically opposed viewpoints. Our world is awash in people claiming “their truth” while the…

John 17:17

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Jesus is praying for his disciples, to make them free from this world of sin.Even though we are in the world, Jesus does not want us to be of the world. This is his exact truth for us.   It is difficult to resist this situation when it  continually pulls at us for one thing or another. I have to always remind myself that even though I am a believer I have to do more than  attend church or read the Bible. I  must ask the Holy Spirit to help me to grow in the spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness. As you…
