Matthew 13: 18-23

verse 22: The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

We all can relate to this passage, I am sure. This verse reminds me to watch for the thorns keeping me from hearing and taking in God’s word. Although there are many times I am fully prepared and ready to hear and to learn, there are other times when God’s word is wasted on me. I used to read this parable and think, “which soil am I?”, as if it was a description of people and we all fit in one or the other category. But I can see how we each may be each type of soil, at times. Sometimes I am not listening, sometimes I am preoccupied, sometimes I have other things I feel I need to do. I will strive to be good soil more often, more receptive, less cluttered and less shallow.

Lord above, I know many of my weaknesses, you know all of them. Help me to listen and take in your teaching. I am so thankful for your many blessings. Amen

20210114 Thursday, Daily Devotion - Matthew 13:21

21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Today’s scripture talks about how weak and shakable life without deep-rooted is. Although we read, meditated, memorized, or remembered the Word of God, unless we have rooted God’s word deep in our souls, we are still weak and shakable by environments, people, or many other things. Rooting the Word of God deep in our soul is a crucial process in meditation for the mature and growing Christian life. How can I make the Word of God deeper and deeper in my spirit and soul? This is a…

Matthew 13: 18-23

My reception of God’s Word is determined by the condition of my heart. Not in the medical sense, but in how the Holy Spirit has helped me cultivate my love and understanding of God. A seed was sown at my birth and through my life I have attempted to understand God and the meaning of life through Jesus. Since reading the Bible the past couple of years, I have come to know God better and hope that my faith grows more every day. May our faith and our lives always represent the good soil in this parable.

Dearest Lord open my heart to all your teachings, as Jesus has shown that an open heart finds the way.…

Matthew 13: 18-23

The four types of soil and The seed represents God’s Word and his message. The seed lands on four different types of soil: hard, shallow, weedy, and good. This represents the different responses to God’s message. And we respond so differently because of our individual life styles. Some are very hard hearted, others cannot get beyond themselves, some are totally distracted from all the stress and worry in their life, and some of so open to hear God’s word and respond to it daily. How has God taken root in my life, what kind of soil am I. how have I grown. I believe I have experienced the four types of Soil. Today i…

January 14, 2021. Devotion Matthew 13:18-23 Today’s reading is the parable or the seed/sower/soil. It is found in three of the gospels. Jesus must have considered it the most important because not only can we read it three times but he explains the meaning. I posted the picture below, because it gives me hope that even if I do not provide the best soil to hear and understand God’s words and explain them to others, he will persist in me. These flowers are growing in ash from the Mt. St. Helen’s explosion in 1980. I’m told that it is only recently have plants begun to appear again. I see that as God persisting. That “soil” was going to produce something be…

Matthew 13:18-23

20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.

I’m afraid this is what I am becoming. I receive the word on Sunday with joy and understanding, but an important part of it goes out of my mind soon after. I’m at the time in my life where I can’t recall things in the recent past but clearly recall things that happened 70 years ago. I told Barbara during Sunday’s sermon that she is my “reminder.” She is always willing to talk about what we are learning and keeps things fresh in my mind.

Dear Lord thank you for my reminder and for the affect that…
