A Daily Devotion for Thursday, Jan. 29

Psalm 16:1-7

Keep me safe, my God,

for in you I take refuge.

I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;

apart from you I have no good thing.”

I say of the holy people who are in the land,

“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”

Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.

I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods

or take up their names on my lips.

LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;

you make my lot secure.

The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

surely I have a delightful inheritance.

I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;

even at night my heart instructs me.

For some reason the line from verse 6 jumps out at me: “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; (surely I have a delightful inheritance.)” I think David is telling us that we are already so blessed by God, there is no reason for us to be looking to what others have, or how blessed they may be. We have enough when we have God. We have enough, and we have more than enough to look forward to. All due to the inexplicable grace of God.

Holy Lord, you have blessed me beyond measure. I know I tend to ask for a lot, and I know you understand. I ask for grace and peace and your love for my family today and moving forward. Amen

Psalm 16:1-7

Verse 2, “You are my Lord, goodness is nothing apart from You.” Everything good in my life comes from God, “Praise God from whom all blessings flow”! Chasing anything else as a source of our blessings (money, power, material possessions, status, idols) is meaningless and will likely only lead to pain. David says, ”Lord, you are the portion of my inheritance and my cup.” I have all that I need and have an overflowing cup of blessings. It is not about having everything, it is about knowing I have God.

Dear God, thank you for giving me everything that I need and for filling my cup with blessings. Amen.

Psalm 16:1-7. All Seasons

Psalm 16 speaks of living in companionship with God. I know he is my companion. We talk often. I share much with Him. I find this so easy to do. I share it all--the good and the not so good. I still have moments of anxiety, but far fewer that if I keep it all to myself. I trust he is listening and this calms me.

Prayer: Gracious God, you are such a good friend. Thank you for always being near. AMEM

ALL SEASONS

(Focus: to be intentional in daily worship

Today’s reading: psalm 16:1-7

Psalm 16:7

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

This verse is part of a larger thankful statement  by David that God is his refuge and that he finds his security only in the Lord.  David expresses deep, intentional gratitude for God's active role as a counselor, suggesting that even in difficult circumstances, God provides direction. I think about the time in my life when I thought I would know what would be helpful. I start looking for a councilor, to seek the help I needed. As i walked through the decision-making process,…

Psalm 16:1-7

Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.” This obvious truth from Scripture is made more clear with each passing year in which lost people pursue happiness and seek purpose in wealth, power, politics and status - none of which supply lasting happiness, meaningful purpose or any peace. I realize that as an individual who has been blessed with much, I am subject to the cry of, “Easy for you to say!” But I still believe it to be true that the most important things we seek are found in God. Do I want to be tested like Job? No, of course not. But how I respond to that has the potential to tell an…
