A Daily Devotion for Thursday, December 16

James 1: 22-25

Do not meeely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it- he will be blessed in what he does.

These verses have become more and more meaningful to me as my faith grows. It is still so easy for me to lose sight of what I have read and learned. Life gets in the way and seems to take over. But God put us here, right where we are, to live our lives. And he has given instructions. The better I am at keeping those instructions in my head and my heart, the more my life follows God’s plan for me.

Lord God, you have given me all that I need. Forgive me for needing more. I am thankful you are there to guide me. Amen

James 1:22-25

I spend so much time concerned with how I look on the outside and what I wear. God cares more about the inside than he does about the outside. God wants me to have a godly heart because He knows that who I am on the inside is way more important than the outside. Therefore, I will search my heart. Try harder to obey the Lord. Learn to be attentive to hear his voice in prayer. gain more spiritual awareness so that I can become all God desires.God chose me now I must bring him the glory as I mature inside. It is vital to obey God. Being in God’s word every day can be the only…

James 1:22-25

On Tuesday’s zoom I mentioned my Canadian cousins who were farmers and whom I spent a lot of time with. They read the bible to us every morning. I said I wondered if they really understood or thought about what they read. However, I think they were the most Christians people that I have known. They didn’t talk about what they read, but lived what the spirit was telling them to do. I think this is what I see in these verses. Read and listen to the word and live it. That is obedience.

Dear Lord, Help me to be like my cousins. I feel like I am just starting on the journey that they lived all their…

James 1:22–25 As important as it is to listen and read God‘s words, it is much more important to put them into action. We are charged to be his hands and feet. We can’t just read. We can’t just sit in a pew on Sunday morning. We should think of Church as a verb. We must be doing God’s work. Prayer: gracious God I am so grateful for the talents given to me so that I may give back. Amen

James 1: 22-25

25 But whoever looks intently into the prefect law that gives freedom, and continues in it---not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it---they will be blessed in what they do.

God’s laws are the laws we follow. They are the laws that give us freedom through the Holy Spirit to guide us while on earth. We are empowered to overcome our own desires in order to practice the discipline needed to follow God’s laws. We must never forget His word but use it in our lives every day.

Dearest Lord, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. The grace the Holy Spirit gives me, helps me to overcome the temptations of life. In Jesu…

James 1: 22-25

The modern version of this could be “you have to walk the talk.” Failure to do this is at the root of the frequent accusation both inside and outside of the church of hypocrisy. People can generally forgive the occasional failure of a trustworthy and sincere person, but most can spot a phony a mile away. When Christians not only hear the Word, but actually go out and live it, we have our greatest opportunity to help others on the path to faith and eternal life.

Prayer - Gracious God, and am in Your Word daily, but there are times when I do not do what is called for. Like Paul in Romans 7, I sometimes lament,…
