A Daily Devotion for Thursday, December 11

James 4:6-10

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud

but shows favor to the humble.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

I am thinking that the sentiment behind these verses is this: Do not be comfortable with holding on to sin. Even though what we are doing or saying or feeling may seem justified to us, we are wrong when we allow ourselves to get comfortable. This is not true joy, to hold a grievance or find pleasure in doing what we know is wrong. I am not proud of this, but I have spent way to much time with resentment over past experiences. The resentment can come to feel safe. This is not joy.

Holy Lord, help me to become aware when I slip into resentment or anger. I want to come nearer to you so that you can be nearer to me. Amen

James 4:6-10

We all have moments when we feel proud about something, maybe something we accomplished or event in our lives. The problem lies when we do not put God first at these times, when we do not acknowledge that God provides all goodness and success in our lives. We must humble ourselves and give God all the credit.

Precious Lord, I humbly pray to You to forgive me for my prideful moments. Please help me to always place you first above all things. Your Grace is all I need. Amen

A new way of praying

(Focus: those struggling to forgive.

James 4:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Can people admit the truth of James 4:8. It calls for us to give  sincere repentance, humbling ourselves  and turning away from worldly desires to draw closer to God, it is a spiritual need for seeking genuine faith and a closer relationship with God.This verse emphasizes a deep, personal transformation, not just religious acts, involving cleansing from sin (dirty hands) and single-minded devotion (pure hearts) to experience God's presence.I need to confess my sin and to remember that Jesus has already paid…

James 4:6-10

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Can deliverance be that straightforward, be that simple? Perhaps it seems so strange because going with the flow and imagining I am resisting the devil is easier than the work of actually resisting evil. The flip side of this coin is drawing nearer to God. Both these tasks take effort. I cannot be passive. The devil’s works must be vigorously resisted. He must never be allowed a foothold. Even small compromises can lead to great disasters. By fervent and frequent prayer the cluttered pathways of this world can be cleared so that I may come closer to God.…
