A Daily Devotion for Thursday, Dec. 10

Isaiah 61:1-4

Verse 1: The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

I read one brief commentary this morning that steered me to something I never would pick up on my own. These verses are the same verses Jesus reads in Luke 4:18-19 while in the synagogue. After he finishes he says to the people, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Statements from Jesus clarifying exactly who he is are so precious to me, and now I have another! I am so thankful to God for giving us His Word to lead us to the truth, and for providing the Holy Spirit to us for strength and direction.

Holy Lord, during this Advent season I am learning more about you. I thank you, God for stretching me, and for providing me with new hope every day. It is never too late to grow closer to you and today you have shown me this again. Thank-you, Father. Amen

Isaiah 61: 3 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.

The nation of Israel at the time Isaiah, guided by the Holy Spirit began to prophesy about what was to come: The nation of Israel had been taken captive and the people were being heavily distressed by their captors. many people were confused, afraid, and certain God had left them for good. Isaiah reminded God's people in many places that it was their sin against a holy God that had forced His…

Feeling God’s love is so important to all of us. It makes us strong and lifts us up. Isaiah received the Holy Spirit and was selected by God to preach the good news of God’s love and comfort to those who were sad. When we received the Holy Spirit, we received that love in our lives. We now are able to bring that joy, beauty and love to others.

20201210 Thursday, Daily Devotion - Isaiah 61:1-4 (NIV) The Year of the LORD’s Favor

Today’s scriptures show the works of the Holy Spirit. All of them were the happenings when the Holy Spirit came upon Isaiah. The works of the Holy Spirit won’t be changed even in our lives today. Those works are the detailed description of the works of restoration. We can tell how seriously God wants to restore things in human beings.

Proclaiming good news to the poor

Binding up the brokenhearted

Proclaiming freedom for the captives

Releasing from darkness for the prisoners

Comforting all who mourn

Providing for those who grieve to bestow on them a crown of beauty

Change from ashes into the oil of joy,…

Isaiah 61:3c - “They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.”

The prophet describes those previously defeated and downtrodden as “oaks of righteousness.” The image of a majestic, tall, resilient tree is one of encouragement and hope. Our community, state, country and the whole world has been buffeted by the strange events of 2020. My prayer is that renewal in our churches and of God’s people will make 2021 a year dominated by mighty oaks of righteousness.

Prayer- God of all that is righteous, lead Your people from under the yoke of this horrid virus. Deliver us from the seemingly endless violence and turmoil that feckless politicians in some cities refuse to…
