2Timothy 3:14-17

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet,

a light on my path.

The passage from Timothy reads differently today than it ever has before. It has always bothered me, because I mistakenly thought Paul was including his own writings as “God-breathed and useful for teaching, etc.” But of course there was no New Testament during this time! He was referring to the Old Testament readings, as they were collected and studied at that time. But even that “insight” which came to me relatively recently, is not what is new to me today. Paul describes the existing Word of God this way: “..from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” Paul recognized that the Holy Scriptures of his day had led him and other believers exactly to where they needed to be, following Christ Jesus!

Holy Lord, you teach me something new every day! Help me to grow closer and closer to you. I have so much to learn. Amen
