John 4:4-14
Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
This passage led me to thinking about water and how important these wells were to the people. They had to dig the wells with no machinery, no huge drills or shovels. Water was known to be essential to life, and wells were no doubt highly valued. Yet when a stranger came along, he or she was allowed to drink from the well water. Everyone got thirsty on a regular basis and needed to return to the well for water. Jesus offered to fulfill a need in the Samaritan woman- to give her living water- so that she would never need to search for the truth again. He would, by identifying Himself to her, offer her eternal life. She would live up to this gift from Jesus by spreading the good news to anyone who would stop to listen. May I do the same.
Holy Lord, I am so thankful for your gifts, your grace and your forgiveness. May I live up to your plans for me and May my life be pleasing to you, I pray. Amen

John 4:1-14
Water, the most important thing we consume. We need water to sustain our lives. I looked up the vital role water plays in what our bodies need for proper functioning; hydration, nutrient transport, digestion and waste removal, temperature regulation, electrolyte balance, cognitive function, skin health, among others. Just as water is needed for us to survive physically, the Word of God and His presence in our lives is needed for our spiritual survival. We get water in many different forms like pure water, tea, juices, etc and even IV fluids, if necessary . God’s Water comes to us in different forms as well, our Bibles, sermons, Bible study, devotional groups, etc. we need to take advantage of al…
John 4:4-14
This story is so familiar and my first thought was that I had little to say. Then I sensed the writer of the reflection in The Upper Room hit on something important. His story and the prayer focus was on Bible study groups. I currently participate in three such groups and as Bev has expressed about the Transformers, these groups serve as a life-affirming oasis from the cares and troubles that surround us. The time spent with others in God’s Word provides the refreshment of living water. We will never thirst again not because we don’t need another drink, but because living water is always available in limitless supply.
Prayer - Gracious God, thank You for the gift…
