A Daily Devotion for November 29


Ephesians 3:14-19


For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge- that you may be filled to the measure of all fullness of God.


Paul's prayer for the Ephesians focuses on God's abundant love for his creation. His love is there, has always been there, yesterday today and tomorrow. What these verses tell me today is that God's love for me is greater than anything I can readily and easily understand. The closer I draw to God, the more I will experience this love.


Holy Lord, I do feel your love for me, but sometimes I doubt that love because I know how undeserving I am. Help me, Jesus, to live in your love, every minute of every day. I am yours. Amen

Ephesians 3:14–19 In verse 18, we see the abundance of God’s love for us. It is wider, longer, higher, and deeper than we can imagine. God’s love is total. This is very humbling. I can only try to offer the same love to him. I’m sure I fall short, often letting life get in the way. Prayer: gracious God, I am glad you offered me so much. May I work to do the same for you. Amen

This talks to me of the abundance we receive from Jesus. I have been struggling with what to do about a sign in front of our new church. We have a sign welcoming LGBTQ and we have many members from this group. We now have a BLM sign. My problem is we don’t welcome everyone with a sign. I just don’t feel that this is what Jesus would do.

Ephesians 3:14-19

Becky and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary yesterday. The mystical power in our human relationship mimics the power we are bestowed being rooted and established in God’s love. As Paul writes, the width, length, height and depth of this kind of love surpasses knowledge. Randy Travis‘ description of the love of a man for a woman is affecting, but to think it barely scratches the surface of God’s love is sobering. Here are the lyrics:

Stronger than the river

Higher than the pine trees growin' tall upon the hill

My love is purer than the snowflakes

That fall in late December

And honest as a Robin on a springtime window…
