A Daily Devotion for Monday, September 4

Colossians 4:5-6

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity . Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

How does one season their conversation with salt? In this context, it seems as though we are being reminded not to allow ourselves to be wishy-washy or unclear when speaking the Truth. We should look for opportunities and not shy away from them. This is difficult for me, but it has become a bit easier with age. It is the wisdom piece- the knowing what to say- that still holds me back.

Holy One, help me to listen for your voice through your Holy Spirit. If I can listen, I will hear the direction I am seeking. Listening is so difficult. Amen

Colossians 4:5-6

How we speak reflects in many ways how Christianity not only are viewed by ourselves but those we come in contact with. Are we reflecting the words we are taught to say or that what we think we should say? Just as we are challenged by Pastor Jen “homework “ to go out and shout out or whatever way your moved to..

Dear Lord,

Help me to choose my words with that salt and flavor that you would want me to do by both listening and speaking. Amen

Colossians 4:5-6

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Imagine serving a delicious meal with steak, but put nothing on it. Serve it with no seasoning of any kind, no flavoring, just plain. This might prove to be a very tasteless meal. Sometimes when trying to be pleasant with non believers our words could become unimportant and tasteless as well. This means that our words, like salt should be flavored with kindness. These flavor filled words would be even more meaningful in strengthening these same relationships ,butwe must…

Colossians 4:5-6

We should know by now that no matter where we are or who we are speaking with, our conversation is an opportunity to act out our Christian values by listening carefully and being kind in our responses. Where food is concerned, salt enhances the flavor. Paul is asking us to do the same.

Prayer: Gracious God, May I keep studying your word so that I may offer your love to all. Amen

Colossians 4:5-6 Grace is the salt that seasons our conversations with others. Am I deeply listening? Am I being understanding and compassionate or obstinate and selfish? Am offering help or dictating behavior?

Am I correcting with love or with ridicule? The two examples of the dictator, Tito and Bishop Fulton Sheen given in yesterday’s sermon is a perfect example.

Prayer - Dearest Lord, may it be so that when someone says Tom uses salty language, it is in the way described by Paul that honors You. Amen
