A Daily Devotion for Monday, September 15

John 16:1-7

“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

John 14:26

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

The disciples must have been overwhelmed with grief and fear after Jesus’ death.  It is unimaginable.  He had told them what they were to do, and it was a huge, vitally important, world-changing job.  And Jesus would not be there to help them!  It would be terrifying!  But the Holy Spirit was sent, just like Jesus promised, and we have been included, as Christian believers.  I know I do not deserve this blessing; an advocate, an ever-present God living within me, guiding my path.

Holy Lord, your Holy Spirit dwells within me, and for that I am so very grateful.  Amen

John 16:1-7 Out in this particular environment, especially when going through tiny villages, many with populations less than 100, it seems a hard to imagine significant persecution of Christians. Churches are numerous and Christian imagery abounds in the public square. There is clearly no Spanish Civil Liberties Union endlessly litigating to rid the country of its rich Christian heritage. There are subtle signs, however, that like the rest of Europe, in the big cities, secularism is more dominant. As for me, I prefer the peace, kindness and gentleness of the faithful in the small villages.

Prayer - Lord, in a changing world where the faith is seeing decline, strengthen those who hold on to and practice their faith. If the time…

Not alone

John 14:26

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

These words are meant to be comforting during hard times. Since Jesus  knew, ahead of time what would happen, we can be even more confident to trust Him. When I think about all the changes I have had to make in my life ,it is so good to know that I did not have to do them alone. I have a divine helper, the Holy Spirit who will not  only remind me what to do, but also strengthens…
