A Daily Devotion for Monday, May 9

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

This verse takes me right back to the verse from earlier in the week regarding serving two masters. (Matthew 6:24) If I am worried about making money, above all else, I am not seeking God. When I am truly seeking and serving God, I am not able to worry or stress over making more money. If I am chasing more income over all else, I am not concerning myself with whether I am on God’s path.

Holy Lord, I am thankful for your many blessings and for your grace. I have at points in my life lost my way but you did not let me go. You are my master, above any earthly power or treasure. Thank- you for showing me the way, more than once, back to you. Amen

This thought has been popularly perverted to read “money is the root of all evil”, which we know is not true. Evil can have its root in jealousy, lust, hate, etc. As Barbara said – it is the way money is used that makes it good or evil. There is a lot of good done by the wealthy.

Dear Holy Spirit put your loving thoughts into the minds of the wealthy, as well as the rest of us, and together we can do good things. Amen.

Wealth can be used for good as well as evil. Love of money is not the source of evil; it is what we do with that wealth that can be a source of evil. As children of God, we are promised that God will provide for our needs. Paul is telling me that wealth is not the problem, but the greed associated with getting more is the problem.

Dearest Lord, may I always use my earthly wealth for good and not allow it to become my master. Only…

1 Timothy 6:10 This verse is often missed quoted as “money is the root of all evil.” While too much money plays a part, it is the LOVE of money that is the problem. It is the obsession for more and more that is the problem. We need to learn that having lots of money should lead us to using it for good – doing God’s work. If we are that fortunate, we should be sharing it for good not buying more things. Prayer: gracious God may my love for you outweigh my love for money and things. Amen

Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. Well, Nothing can be plainer than this scripture The Bible is the Word of God so if that’s what it says then, that’s what it means. It just says the love of money, SO can I have as much money as I want as long as I don’t love it. Despite overwhelming evidence most people still believe that money brings happiness. Paul is claiming that Christianity does involve contentment when having housing, food and clothes (our needs met). Timothy is being warned about t…

1 Timothy 6:10

The “get rich quick” scam, in its many forms, has pierced countless people with many griefs. i wonder what happens when someone provides the requested information by email to the Nigerian “bank” that needs to release $17 million in the recipient’s bank account “for safe keeping.” Even in some sections of the church there remains the puzzling popularity of pyramid style sales schemes that promise amassing riches while working from home a few hours a week. We can have both money and God, but we can only truly love one or the other as was pointed out in Matthew. Paul’s letter to Timothy makes clear the love of money, rather than God is a path to nowhere.
