A Daily Devotion for Monday, December 21

Joshua 23:6,11 24:14

verse 23:6 “Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.”

This verse describes keeping one’s attention on what is important. Turning our attention away or in a direction other than toward God is the first step in straying from Him. I like the idea of having a warning signal: a little whistle or horn informing us we have started down the wrong path. (Like when our GPS tells us to make a u-turn, and we know we are going the wrong way.)

We sing these words every week: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face...”. It is so simple!

Lord, may I remember to keep my eyes and my heart and my attention on you. When I think I don’t know which way to turn, I am wrong. I can always turn to you. Amen

I don’t know about you but when I buy something new particularly a first time purchase I just can’t wait to try it out. Most importantly I read the manual carefully . The manufacturer puts the instruction manual in the box so the consumer can get the most out of it and not have problems or breakages. In (Joshua 23: 6 ) Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left,. Well the same is true of the Christian life. I very easily forget how I should live and what I should do. So…

Joshua 23: 6, 11; 24: 14

24:14 “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.”

As Joshua attempted to tell his people that they should worship only one Lord, this same call is needed today. We should serve the Lord with all our heart and soul. As believers, we have been saved from sin and eternal death. We have been rescued by God, redeemed and blessed. We are a chosen people and we shoud serve Him in sincerity and truth.

Dearest Lord, thank you for all you have done for me. Thank you for loving me even when I falter…

Joshua 24:14 - “ “Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.”

In Joshua’s farewell address he reminds the people they have a choice to make - serve the Lord or other gods. We face the same choice today. Do we serve the gods of wealth, hedonism, and scientism, or do we serve the Lord of Hosts who was made flesh and dwelt among us? In the words of Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Prayer - Lord of all creation, there are no other gods before You. I revere and…
