A Daily Devotion for Monday, December 19

Proverbs 21:21

Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

In my Bible, there is a footnote indicating that the word "righteousness" can be substituted for the word "prosperity." I don't understand the choice of the word prosperity in this case. We know (from scripture as well as experience): being a good Christian will not make you wealthy. But maybe prosperity does not always involve money and material worth. Maybe prosperity and honor go together as in "having a wealth of friends". I do know I honor my close friendships. I hope that my life as a Christian makes me a good friend, loyal, and honorable.

Father God, I do not think of myself as deserving any honor. I would like to be seen by others as a good friend, loyal and trustworthy. You know my heart, and know that I long to grow closer and closer to you. Amen
