A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 27

Matthew 6:24

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

The conflict between serving God and being 'of the world' does often boil down to a matter of money. It is far too easy for me to schedule my life around my work, dividing up the time that is left over. I suppose it is necessary to spend most of my time at work. But, it does not need to be my master. When I have a decision to make which is a matter of prioritizing how to spend my time, I hope that I can choose to serve God rather than put in a few more hours in the office. The more I choose to serve Him, the more I will be content and at peace.

Holy Lord, I pray I will be able to clearly see the choices I have, and to always come down on the side of serving you. Amen

Matthew 6:24

This is one of six verses with Jesus teaching us about money. While we do need money to live in our culture, we do t have to desire it more than desiring a relationship with Jesus. We are bombarded every day with ads that help us spend our money, even if we don’t need anything—we just want everything. I have been guilty of this. It takes self control to put money and goods aside and concentrate on serving God.

Prayer: Gracious God, Help me in my decision making to put your needs before mine. Amen

Jesus is teaching about money. He explains a person cannot serve both God and money. This does not mean that someone who serves God whole-heartedly will not have money or possessions. Jesus is not suggesting that Christians must be poor, or destitute, or flee from any kind of luxury. It doesn't mean that being a Christian is unsuitable for being rich. What He means is that a person sincerely serving God will not organize their lives around wealth. Money, fo…

Matthew 6:24 The indecision implied in trying to serve both God and money leaves one vulnerable to the sin of hypocrisy. People can generally see right through a phony who talks the Christian talk, but who ostentatiously lives above their means while not supporting the ministries of the church. I would rather be thought of as one who worked to live, to spend time with his family and to honor God rather than one who lived to work, to get just one more dollar for that luxury car, trophy house or exotic vacation.

Prayer - Lord, please help me keep my focus where it ought to be. I know I cannot serve both You and money. Let me serve You an…
