Luke 9:57-62
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
He said to another man, “Follow me.”
But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
When I was a kid in church, I often came away with the distinct sense that I could never live up to what was expected of me as a Christian. This passage from Luke brings back those same feelings to me. It is hard to fully follow Christ, when we use this framework. But if I put this message in perspective, and think about removing unnecessary hindrances, I can see there is more I can do to get closer to Christ. I can stop ruminating over things that fill up my brain space with anxiety, I can actively ask God to take control of those things that I cannot control, and I can accept the peace that He is willing to bestow on me. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Holy Lord, I can never live up to your promises and your gifts and grace. I will continue to try to do my best. Amen

Decluttering
(Focus: to prioritize my relationship with Jesus
Luke 9:57
As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
The author of this morning’s message, was surely an opening lesson for me. My sewing room has needed to be decluttered so many times. Even today it still needs another declutter. I will repeat this task as often as required. In the mean time I did learn that In my daily work I am following him. As I attend any meeting either for positive or negative results, I am following him. As I cook and wash up and clean the house I follow him. As I wai…
Luke 9:57-62 I had lunch with a friend recently who began attending a new church a couple of years ago. He and his wife have become active and made friends and decided to become members. In this church, membership is decided upon by the elder board after an interview with the candidate(s). This may strike us as odd, but the Christian life makes demands on us as Jesus pointed out in this example from Luke. In this light, probing a potential member’s commitment to live the Christian life doesn’t sound so extreme. One wonders if perhaps many of today’s churches are so flabby because they expect very little from their members and lack any form of accountability. It is a question…
