A Daily Devotion for Friday, October 10

Psalm 46:1-11

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the LORD has done,

the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease

to the ends of the earth.

He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;

he burns the shields with fire.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth.”

The LORD Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

1 Corinthians 14:33

God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

Yesterday I took a long walk, and was listening to a news compilation which helps me keep at least somewhat current. I was surprised at how a few of the stories moved me in an uncomfortable way. The accounts of blatantly manipulative business practices (online) meant to part people from their money made me sad. These were not scams, but the creations of up and coming “entrepreneurs”. What was sad was not that these people are making a living, but that others are suffering because of these practices. The way the platforms are set up encourages impulsive and often compulsive spending. We understand so much about the human mind and addiction- why do we allow these sales practices to continue in this way? The devotion this morning reminded me of this news “article.” There are many things in this world which can trip us up, ensnare us, or simply lead us to unhappiness. God is our refuge from this. God is, indeed, our “center”. When we stick close to God, we are safer and more secure in our lives here on earth. We cannot avoid dangers, but we can’t afford to walk around without our armor.

Holy Lord, you open my eyes to the dangers around me, yet at the same time provide me shelter and safety. Thank you for your protection. I am yours, and am so very grateful. Amen

Psalm 46:1-11. 1Corinthians 14:33.

"Mom, we need to work on your core--your Center. When that's strong, most of your body will follow." This is the advice I hear often from one of my daughters. When I read today's devotion, I thought of her words as they applied to other things. To put these words to work in my faith-based life, I know for a fact that this group and my bible study are centering me and building my faith--my core, my center.

Prayer: Gracious God, Every morning help me build my core, my center as I study your word. AMEN

1 Corinthians 14:33

For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

God creates the world not as a haphazard, chaotic place, but as a world governed by certain rules, this verse emphasizes the need for order and structure in our church to reflect God's nature and to be a true witness to Him. Chaos or disorderly services do not properly represent a God of peace. In our personal life, which extends beyond the church itself, it encourages me to look at my own live and situations to see if I am characterized by order or chaos. If a situatio…

Psalm 46:1-11

The Lord “makes wars cease

to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.

He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’”

I heard this morning on the radio there are currently 13 declared wars around the globe involving dozens of of countries. We must all remain in prayer for the Lord to act decisively to break bows, shatter spears and burn shields. I shudder to think of what it will take to convince those who wage war of the evil that is perpetuated. Only if those obsessed with power, dominion, conquest and revenge would be still and encounter the Prince of Peace will these…
