You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
While Tom and I were walking in Portugal, I decided to memorize the 23rd Psalm. Of course I knew every line by heart already. But in what order? That was tough for me. But reading this verse today, and then again the entire psalm, I am seeing it as entirely about God's abundance! I will now think of it as subtitled: 'God's Abundance'. Rest, peace, guidance, courage, food, protection, love and eternity are all in this psalm. No wonder it is a favorite. It is now my favorite, as well.
Holy Lord, you provide me with everything I need. And you provide even when I am not aware. I am thankful today for all of your blessings. Please be with those today who especially need your peace. Amen

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
In this psalm, we see a beautiful portrait of God who leads us by still waters and guides us into ways of peace. This is a well-loved psalm of David, giving thanks for our faithful God, our merciful and gracious Savior, who keeps us, protects us, and provides for us through all of our changing lives. Psalm 23:5 I have always loved the last three words of this familiar psalm; “my cup overflows.” God’s abundance is described perfectly here. He has provided all we need and more. Whatever I need at any given time, God will provide. It may be food and shelter, it may be health, it may be talent or wisdom, it may simply be peace in the midst of chaos. I can call on him and he will help my cup overflow. Prayer: Gracious God, Thank you for all the forms of abundance you offer to me. May I always be aware of your presence. Amen

Our wonderful God supplies all that we need to survive in this world. We are blessed with a good and faithful Shepherd who guides us into a way of peace. “Though we live in the war-zone of this fallen world system, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ... and the peace of God which guards our hearts in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.” (Taken from a daily verse I read.} In the gifts of God’s abundance, we receive protection, comfort and love. He is the One who guides me to salvation.
Psalm 23:5
As Becky observes, this whole psalm is a pean to God’s love and care for us. We will not lack anything we truly need and will even be spiritually supported when faced with opposition. Abundance is more than material possessions and God’s abundance is inexhaustible.
Prayer - Shepherding God, Your abundant peace, guidance, protection, goodness and mercy toward Your children knows no end. We can only offer humble thanks in return and strive to love others as You love us. Amen
