A Daily Devotion for Friday, November 21

I Kings 19:11-18

The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

The LORD said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

I loved today’s devotion. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us, sometimes quiet as a whisper. Since we miss the majority of God’s workings, a position of gratitude is always in order. Now I understand the scripture that encourages us to be thankful in all situations and circumstances. If we do not pay attention, we may not notice and appreciate God’s workings in our lives and in the lives of those for whom we pray.

Holy Lord, open my eyes that I may see. Help me to listen and be attentive to you. I am so thankful for all that you do in my life , for all that you do for all of those who seek you. Thank you for answered prayers. Amen

A sign

(Focus:To be alert for God’s signs

1 Kings 19:12

And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.

Each day as my husband and I go for our ride, I am amazed at the different visuals I may see for the first time. As many times as I past them by each day, I think, wow I never saw that before. This is the same, when I I don’t hear  God’s soft whisper. In a world full of distraction, we need to deliberately create moments of silence and stillness to listen. This is how Elijah found the Lord afte…

I Kings 19:11-18

Elijah finally heard God’s still, small voice at the bottom of his reserves. He was alone and besieged by Ahab and Jezebel, facing the real possibility of death. Yet God was there to protect him. In a June sermon, I shared the story of 13–year-old Bethany Hamilton who was attacked by a shark while surfing. The shark severed her left arm. She was helped to shore and remembers to this day the voice of a paramedic who whispered to her, God will never leave you, nor forsake you.” Not only did Bethany recover, but despite the loss of one arm, became one of America’s top surfers. Her story is told in the 2007 documentary Heart of a…
