A Daily Devotion for Friday, May6

Matthew 6:24

”No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

This seems simple enough. Sometimes I wonder what it would look like if my life really came down to a choice like this. I don’t think I even have the stomach for a life of chasing money. On the other hand, it is fairly easy to get agitated and upset over money. Allowing wealth or the lack of it to put a wedge between us and God is clearly a bad move. My master is God.

Holy Lord, your Word reminds me that in you, I have all I need. There is no need to worry about having more. Amen

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Money is not evil. Money can be used for a lot of good. It is the pursuit of money that leads to evil, using money for evil things. The pursuit of money leads to all kinds of sin and, in time, may lead to someone wandering away from the truth…if they were ever in the truth in the first place. We often think the answer to our money problems is to have a little more, but Whoever loves…

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

This verse tells me to never let material things and love of money to take a hold of my life. Wealth can be used for good, but we have to prioritize it in our lives. Otherwise, the love of money may become our master. Being devoted to God may not give us material wealth but it will buy us eternal life with him in heaven.

Dear Lord, I chose you. Sometimes I forget that the material things I accumulate are not the end…

Matthew 6:24

This is an issue that seems to affect every generation here in the US. There is a commercial running now of a very young woman advertising a phone and the tag line is it will “save you more money to buy more stuff.” The peddlers of the so-called “prosperity gospel” play into the dangerous love of money and have become favored caricatures for those who ridicule Christianity. If those around us, both young and old, do not see an alternative approach to money and wealth modeled by genuine Christians, how will they know there is a more excellent way?

Prayer - Dear Lord, loosen my hand on the blessings you have given me, avoiding the trap that a…

Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Too many people today do just what this verse warns them about. They are so intent on money; earning it, spending it, and loving it that they really do not enjoy a satisfying life. It seems that there’s always more money to have and more to buy. Their lives often seem unfulfilled because they never seem to have enough. Maybe they think one more million, or one more exotic trip, or expensive car will give them what they need, but it doesn’t so they continue the cycle. What…
