A Daily Devotion for Friday, May 10

Isaiah 55:8-9

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declared the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts…”

Human beings often bristle at being told they cannot have access to information they request. Often we feel as if we are being told that the answers are too complicated or too important or that they have nothing to do with us, and so the information won’t be shared. With God, it feels different. It seems as though God has allowed His creation to learn so much, to know so many things. We have figured a lot of things out. But there is much we do not know. We never do know God’s “when.”

Holy Lord, when I am tempted to ask, “when?”, may I instead say, “thank-you”. Your decisions about time are part of a plan I cannot fathom. You have a plan which is perfect, and I am thankful to be a part of it. Amen

Isaiah 55:8-9

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

God gives us hopes and dreams for certain things to happen in our lives, but He doesn't always allow us to see the exact timing of His plan. Although frustrating, not knowing the exact timing is often what keeps us in his word.  There are times when I might give up if I knew how long it was going to take, but when I accept God's timing, I can learn to live in hope and…

Isaiah 55:8-9

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways beyond anything you can imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.

How many times have I said to God, “What were you thinking?” after some disaster. Where is this leading us? Why did it happen? When will evil stop and peace prevail? My questions, while honest and heartfelt, are about me and my timing—not God’s. I must remember that his knowledge and timing are His and not mine. I must pray and trust in Him.

Prayer: Gracious God, Please help me understand your plan an…

Isaiah 55:8-9

The image Becky has chosen is so perfect for this Isaiah passage. Verses 10 and 11 go on to say, “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it

without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent.”

Rain does not always come at the “right” time for our purposes and desires. Nevertheless rain is never wasted as it replenishes and nourishes the earth. So too…
