A Daily Devotion For Friday, March11

Proverbs 27:2

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.

Bragging about oneself is such a “turn-off” to others. To me it usually feels like someone is hiding some insecurity or building themselves up when they habitually need to brag. It is tiresome and puts a wall between the person and myself. Worst of all, it is insincere and does not allow others to see our genuine selves. God sees all.

Father God, you see through every false word. May I be transparent and genuine to all I meet. Amen

We must remember to always be humble. I was brought up to do things with no expectation of anything in return. We need to remember to be generous with whatever we do for others. It is our gift to someone else.

Dear God, Help me to remember that whatever it is I do for others is from my heart and for no other reason. Amen.

Proverbs 27:2 Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth – a stranger, not your own lips. The message here is very clear. We must not be arrogant and boastful! If we do good things and others recognize it and talk about it – that’s OK. God wants us to do our good works only because we should, not for recognition. Prayer: gracious God may I never be boastful about things I have done. May I always recognize the works of others. Amen

Proverbs 27: 2 Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.

We are commissioned by God to do good works and love our neighbor as we love God. We should do these works that may be seen, although we should not do them with the purpose of being seen. If we look for praise this shows evidence of self-love and pride. Being arrogant and prideful, to me are sins against the teachings of God.

Dearest Lord, let me always be mindful of how you expect me to live my life. Give me the grace to never do anything looking for praise. I know at times I fail in this regard, bu…

Proverbs 27:2

It certainly isn’t hard to understand this proverb, It would be difficult to explain more clearly using fewer words. Besides , if you are good, there is no reason to tell other people, they will know it, and if you need to tell someone you are good, how good would you be. This verse strongly advises against self-praise, but also a strong reminder to encourage others. Jealousy, envy and arrogance are negative emotions that torment many. It is difficult not to be jealous of someone who looks better, has more talents, more money, more education. We may want to be happy for that other person but something in us won't allow it. What Go…

Proverbs 27:2

In my experience, it has been the most accomplished people I have encountered who speak the least of themselves. Those who tend to carry on about their accomplishments have seemed to be people who want or deem themselves to be very influential, but are simply not. For the Christian, bragging about being saved is equally distasteful and ineffective for others. Genuine, not affected humility is always more winsome. As Becky frequently reminds me, I have a great deal for which to be humble.

Prayer - God of wisdom, let my witness be one expressed by humble service to others. Should there be any commendation, it should come from their lips and not my own, and all the glory…
