A Daily Devotion for Friday, March 3

John 14:26

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all the things and remind you of everything I have said to you."

God sent the Holy Spirit, not to take the place of Jesus, but to act as our mentor after Jesus was physically gone. The Holy Spirit is able to guide us to the Truth, and help to let us know if we are on the right course. Although the Holy Spirit does not "teach by example", it does lead me to the example of Christ. This is ultimately where all of my learning as a Christian needs to start and finish.

Holy One, your plan is so perfect, although I know I only see a small piece of it. You have sent so much help for all of us: Jesus Christ, and then the Holy Spirit for all of our days. You also sent many others to set examples for us- the Saints and Prophets from the Old Testament, John the Baptist, Mary the mother of Christ, the disciples, and many more. I will listen, and try to learn more and more. Thank you, God. Amen

John 14:26

But when the father sends the advocate as my representative – that is, the Holy Spirit, he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Today’s reading from the upper room is based on John 14:16. I will pray to the father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever. The writer of the devotion ask the Holy Spirit to sit with him during his exams and soon feels a presence beside him. I seldom actually “feel” the presence of the Holy Spirit, yet I know I can pray and call out to this comforter, this advocate at any time. I also know I need t…

John 14:26

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

So the disciples needed the Holy Spirit to be reminded of what Jesus had said to them when He was on earth. The Holy Spirit is to speak to you and I through the Bible – the Word of God – in exactly the same way. That’s why it is so important to read the bible. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what we read. And later, in many situations, the Holy Spirit will teach us the meanings of all the…

John 14:26 I cannot remember who first said, “we do not need to be taught as much as we need to be reminded,” but in this season of life, those words ring truer than ever. The Holy Spirit, through the word and presence has taught me much more than I can remember. Yet the Spirit living in me reminds me, often at just the right time, of forgotten lessons that must be put into action to honor God and be a better ambassador for God’s kingdom.

Prayer - Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence, Your guidance and Your steadfast protection of me in a world that presents so many challenges to faith. May I always hear Your voice above all…
