A Daily Devotion for Friday, June 11

Joshua 24:19-28

Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.” “Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.

I am very comfortable spending time alone. But being alone is not the life God intended for us. We need each other for so many reasons. This scripture reminds us how important it is for us to gather together. We need to be reminded we are God’s people- ALL of us.

This is why we need to worship together. We need to be accountable to one another. We need to remember our promises, God’s grace, and the many gifts we have been given. When we meet together, in small or large numbers, we are reminded of the “why” of our lives.

Holy Father, I am yours. I will gather with your people and remember my promises to you. Help me to be accountable to you and to your people. Amen

Joshua 24: 19-27 Joshua tells the Israelites to get rid of their fake idols of worship and serve the one true God, if they don’t he will not forgive their sins and they will be destroyed. Simple request, but will they obey and serve the one and only God .Joshua then makes a covenant with the Israelites. He writes the words in a book and buries it under a rock by an oak tree. The book was a record of all the Lord’s commands to His people. The stone was not to be an idol but rather a simple reminder, a testimony, of the people’s commitment to serve only the Lord. Here we are 2000 years later and we have …

Joshua 24: 19-28

20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”

A commitment to serve the Lord faithfully. This is something I deal with on a daily basis when I let life’s chores take up more time then my time spent with God. I know this is a challenge I face every day. I need to follow the word of God and put God first. Everything else will fall into place. I just need to keep making the choice to choose God first.

Joshua was…

Joshua 24:19–28 21: But the people shouted, “we won’t worship any other gods. We will worship and obey only the Lord.” Imagine the crowd! Joshua was giving his last words to all the people. The huge crowd shouted! Crowds do that. A few in a crowd can carry that crowd. People can get caught up in the action. Would they really abandon the idols? It makes me think of another crowd shouting “crucify him!” Did they all really wish that or were they caught up in the moment? We need to remember the huge difference between saying and doing. One is so much easier than the other! Prayer: Gracious God guide me as I try to do what I say I wi…
