A Daily Devotion for Friday, December 16

1Timothy 5:17

The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.

I am thinking this morning that in many cases the word honor, even in scripture, implies respect but not necessarily worship or blind obedience. Those called by God to preach or to teach God's word should be respected. We will not always agree, and may question them, but we do need to respect them and to listen. Just like parents, who also are to be honored, those in positions of authority in the church are human beings capable of great good but also fallible.

Holy Lord, I do honor those you call to teach your Word. I have not always resonated with everything they have said, but I hope I was always respectful and honored them. I am so thankful you have sent Pastor Jen to be with us in Contoocook . She is such a faithful and capable teacher and disciple. I do honor her and the work she does in your name. Amen

Showing appreciation for the pastor is a good thing. They need to be appreciated, and, what’s more, they needs to know they are appreciated. There’s a difference. If your appreciation for your pastor is never expressed, then it’s hard for them to know that you actually have good feelings about him. October is usually the month to love on your pastor. We have to have confidence in our leaders because they keep watch over us . We need to do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, Pastor…

1 Timothy 5:17 As used by Paul in this verse, the term elder refers to an older person – not a position they hold. Our culture sometimes forgets the knowledge, wisdom, and work ethic of our older worth workers. Many businesses and even churches look to youth to fill many rules, and discard the older workers. Paul is saying the exact opposite. They should be respected and worthy of a double honor. Prayer: gracious God, open the eyes of the people to the worth of our senior citizens. Amen

I wouldn’t put Pastor Jen or Pastor Gil in the elder category, but they are preaching and teaching the word of God and doing it very well. They each present the word of God in different ways that are easy to understand and enjoy. We should honor them by praying that they will continue to preach the word of God with the wonderful messages that they bring to us.

Dearest Lord, thank you for those who preach your word. They bring understanding and guidance to us in ways that we can relate to…

1Timothy 5:17 This verse reminds me of the “great cloud of witnesses” referenced in the book of Hebrews. As I think back on all the pastors, teachers and church leaders who have helped shape my faith journey from childhood through today, I am grateful. They have my utmost respect and I honor their service on behalf of God’s kingdom.

Prayer - Gracious God, I pray Your blessings on all who preach and teach in Your name. May they stay strong and resilient when the going gets tough. May they feel love, respect and honor from those they help in their faith. Surround them with Your hedge of protection and give them peace. Amen
