A Daily Devotion for Friday, August 11

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Even though this sounds very simple, it is quite thought provoking. Am I to imagine God in Heaven walking around on two legs and feet, with hair on his head, and fingers and toenails? I don't think the physical image is so important as the spiritual one. I believe we were created to be spiritual beings, seeking God; to strive to be better and better and closer to how God intended for us to be. God's traits are our ideals. We will never get there completely, but we are meant to strive to be better.

Holy Lord, I need to always keep this verse in my heart. It will help me to remember who (and how) you intend for me to be. I am still striving for that goal. Lead me, Lord. Amen

Genesis 1:27

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

You and I were created by God for his own glory. Since we have all been made this way ,we need to serve God faithfully in every area of our lives. His plan was to let us have complete authority over the entire earth he had just created. And so all throughout scripture this theme is repeated. The creation will have achieved its purpose to glorify God. And that is what the Bible teaches us. And when answers haven’t been revealed, we can rest and move forward with complete faith and hop…

Genesis 1:27

I think the word image often confuses us. We automatically think of things like “the spitting image” meaning twin like. My Contemporary English Bible and The Living Bible versions do not use the word image. One says “so God made man like his maker. . . “ The other says “so God created humans to be like himself. . .” Maybe, more accurately God created us to be like him—loving, kind, caring, fair and many other wonderful qualities.

Prayer: Gracious God, help me to always be striving to live to your standards. Amen
