A daily prayer from the New England Conference
Members of the New England Conference Extended Cabinet are sharing a daily prayer based on the Revised Common Lectionary for the week.
You are welcome to use these in worship or in your own devotions.
Today's Prayer
Read Luke 14: 25 - 33
Dear Jesus
You invite us to be a “disciple.”
When I read what it means, what you taught those with you those many years ago,
I’m not sure I like what it means.
Hate my family?
My own life?
Make a plan?
Give up all my stuff?
Everything?
It seems that this “disciple” thing involves more than what I might think.
It’s more than standing in the crowd.
It’s more than thoughts and prayers.
It’s more than Sundays and songs and a few good deeds.
It’s a life, centered on your life, death and resurrection. It’s a life, spent learning from you how to live life, truly.
It’s a life, spent learning from you how to live life, deeply.
It’s a life, spent learning from you how to live my life
the way you would live my life
if you were me.
Be I teacher, painter, lawyer, preacher, singer, or father or mother or neighbor,
I am to be the kind of teacher, painter, lawyer, preacher, singer, father, mother, neighbor
the way you would be
if you were me.
Makes sense it needs to be a priority.
Makes sense it requires a plan.
World changing sense.
i offer you today.
We’ll deal with tomorrow, tomorrow.
Amen.
